Kerala State Lottery
In 1967, India's first lottery department was set up in Kerala. Shri. P. K. Kunju Sahib, the FM of Kerala, used the revenue generated from it to carry out the state's public welfare works. At the same time, it provided an opportunity for the participants to change their fortune with minimum investment.
The department of Kerala State Lottery started with humble beginnings and quickly became a pioneer as many other states followed suit, building their own lotteries. Starting with just one lottery, Kerala State Lottery was run with credibility, transparency, and reliability, adopting effective measures for the benefit and welfare of the agents.
The directorate of the lottery is located at Vikas Bhavan at Thiruvananthapuram. In addition to that, there are 14 District Offices and a Regional Deputy Directorate at Ernakulam. It also has over 3 Taluk Lottery Offices, one each at Punalur in Kollam District, Kattappana in Idukki District and Thamarassery in Kozhikkode District.
The Kerala State Government runs three basic types of lotteries. The weekly lottery consists of 6 different lotteries drawn separately from Monday to Saturday. The monthly lottery is drawn on the last Sunday of each month. The Kerala Bumper Lottery is held four times a year and coincides with special festivals and seasons. More details about these lottery types are given in the below tables:

Popularity of Kerala State Lottery
For a state with just 34 million people, Kerala sells, on an average, 90 lakh lottery tickets in a day. Moreover, the bumper lotteries sell 50 lakhs each (last year’s Onam bumper sold 80 lakh tickets).
Most of these regular lottery buyers belong to middle class or lower middle class families who work for daily wages or belong to a low income bracket. They regularly buy as many lottery tickets, and as frequently, as they can afford, hoping to win big someday. A lot of such people have had their wish fulfilled.
